Species account (old)
In view of the considerable variability and overlap of wing features in the members of this family, it is nowadays recognised as essential that identification is confirmed by genital examination - see MBGBI, 10, pp. 234-9. Skinner (CIGBM, 134, Fig. 47) gives some useful underwing characters, but these should be regarded as no more than a preliminary guide. As a consequence, comments by Robson [...] etc., have been largely ignored, and acceptable records begin circa 1950 with the modern generation of entomologists- with the exception that Dr. A. G. Long has undertaken genital examination of some specimens in the Hancock Museum.
