Aproaerema sangiella

Species account (old)
This species was discovered by John Sang in the 1850's, the larvae feeding on Lotus corniculatus in various localities around Darlington. Stainton named it after Sang who had worked out the life history and sent a number of live larvae to other famous entomologists, including E. R. Bankes who described the larvae and pupae in detail in Ent. Mo. Mag., ser. 2, IX, 2-3. He was of the opinion that the species had never been taken outside of Durham at that time. It is still common and widespread in Durham as shown by recent records and rearing successes by TCD. Known nowadays from Hamsterley Forest, Castle Eden Dene, Bishop Middleham Quarry, Malton N. R. and in May 1990 Dr. H. N. B. Simpson found it at Blackhall Rocks (presumably larvae at that early date), Br. J. Ent. & N. H. Vol. 4, Pt. 1, p. 32. [...] We are of the opinion that with further work it will be found in many more Durham, Yorkshire and Northumberland sites than are known at present.
